Geckos

Gecko in a small cup 

Before going to bed, Chris walked by the garage and thought he saw something crawling on the ground. He looked again and it was a 2 inch gecko. I didn't think he'd catch it, but it took him five minutes! The tiny gecko almost made it to hiding away in our bedroom which is still half full of boxes.

Luckily for us, we were able to take pictures despite having to search for batteries. The kids and I were afraid it would climb right out of the cup! But, the cup was to slippery for it to climb out and escape.

We had time to admire the tiny creature and contemplated keeping it. But since we didn't have a tank ready and our cat roams freely in our house, we thought it was best to return the little guy to nature. Plus, the hot, dry weather outside is perfect for geckos. No wonder they are abundant here.

So, tiny gecko was placed outside our window last night. I hope it made it some place safe and away from all the feral cats in the neighborhood.

This is a different gecko we saw climbing outside our dining room window in early June.

It was about 4 inches long and its underside was translucent. The small gecko had just caught several moths that were flying around our window. The light was attracting them. It took four months for us to see a gecko here again. The last time we all saw them was 8 years ago when Chris was a student here. With temperatures reaching 100+ degrees since May, we've spotted these geckos late in the evening.
